Teaching The Correct Way To Tackle

This article is for the benefit for all football coaches especially Youth Football Coaches. Hopefully it will finally put to rest the question on what is the correct way to teach a boy how to tackle.

I cannot believe that this controversy still exists and that coaches are still teaching that it is acceptable to use the helmet or facemask to tackle. For you youth coaches, never ever teach that using the helmet or facemask when making a tackle is the correct technique.

I cringe at the thought of some coaches out there that might still be teaching this as a correct method. Football being what it is there is contact to the head and shoulders, but the helmet is there for protection against injuries and not as a weapon to be used for blocking or tackling.

How could you as a coach live with the reality of a boy breaking his neck because he used what “YOU” taught him when making a tackle.

Let me suggest here a great video that teaches good tackling. Get Hugh Wyatts “Safer and Surer Tackling” video as a guide for you to teach correct tackling principals. Now if you teach Chest Plate Tackling or Shoulder Tackling or a combination of both remember the helmet and facemask is not to be used.

Lastly, if in your research you come across information that informs you to the contrary make sure to comment so everyone else can see that this is “Unacceptable” and the writer of the article needs to correct his thinking.
